You cannot be racist against white people. Racism is more than just words or feelings; it is a deep, systemic, institutionalized assault on a group of people for — among other reasons — the color of their skin, their history, their community, and their differences from “the norm.” (Note that whiteness is not the norm or default setting, but white supremacy has us as a society believing that it is.)
If you don’t understand that you as a white person have done damage to Black people — all Black people, whether you know them or not — by the way you think, act, and exist in the world (especially with the attitude you’ve displayed in this comment), that’s not the author’s fault. She doesn’t owe you anything, but you owe it to yourself and (more importantly) to Black people to examine why you are so deeply incapable of introspection, humility, and self-improvement. Let your guard down and read it again. And again. And again. Every white person has fucked up, myself included. Just because we think we’re well-meaning doesn’t mean we aren’t causing harm.
Just because you’re blunt doesn’t mean you’re right. It just means that when you’re wrong (like you are here), you’re ignorance is easier to spot in a crowd. Wishing you the absolute best on your journey to compassion and understanding; it will be a long one.
